During the 1950s open-topped car is sometimes called convertible coupé, but in the 1960s the term coupe is generally used for closed-topped cars. Generally, two-door coupe, although there is also a four-door, three-, and five-hatchback.
SAE differentiate the coupe from the sedan usual, especially through the volume of space inside. SAE standard J1100 defines a coupe of the car roof with a volume of space in the back of less than 0.93 Meters3. Cars with more volume than it is technically called a two-door sedan, not a coupe, although only two doors. However, some manufacturers still use the term coupe for cars like this, for example: Cadillac Coupe de Ville.
