The Secret Behind Mercedes-Benz Cars Names

Until 1994, Mercedes-Benz used an alphanumeric system for categorizing their vehicles, consisting of a number that indicates the capacity of the car's engine when multiplied by 100 and followed by the letters that indicate the type of body and engine types.

Mercedes-Benz "SLR" McLaren

"C" indicates that the model body coupe / cabriolet.
"D" means the use of diesel engines.
"E" (for "Einspritzen") means the injection petrol engine wear. In some cases, if there is no written "D" or "E" then uses a gasoline engine carburetor.
"G" represents Gelandewagen off-road vehicles.
"K" was used in the 1930s, indicating the engine with a supercharger ("Kompressor"). For SSK, K it is "Kurz" (short-wheelbase / short wheelbase).
"L" represents "Leicht" (lightweight) for sport sedan models, and "Lang" (long-wheelbase / long wheelbase) for sedan models.
"R" stands for "Rennen" (racing / racing), used for racing cars. (eg 300SLR).
"S" means "Sport" for high-performance models or "Special" for the top model / flagship.
"T" stands for "Touring" and mark the type of estate car / station wagon.
For some models, the numbers on naming the car was not in accordance with the engine capacity of the car. These numbers are given only to determine the position of the car in the range of Mercedes-Benz cars

After 1994, the Mercedes-Benz car renew their naming system. Now, the car models are grouped in classes up to 3 letter naming (see above), then followed with a 3-digit (or two-digit for AMG models). For the variant with the same MODL (such as real variant or variants of the diesel engine) are no longer given a different letter. In some cases, this naming is not always certain. For example, SLR and SLS-AMG does not follow this name.

Just as before, 3 numbers on models of Mercedes-Benz does not have a relationship with the car's engine capacity. The number of times even related to engine power output. For example, the E250 CGI has greater engine power than the E200 CGI because of different engine tuning, even though both wearing 1.8L engine.

Some models also add some special features are symbolized by:

"4Matic" means that car use 4 wheel drive.
"BlueTEC" indicates a diesel engine with exhaust pipes selective catalytic reduction.
"BlueEfficiency" indicates the fuel efficiency features (injection, start-stop system, aerodynamic modifications, etc..)
"CGI" (Charged Gasoline Injection) indicates a direct gasoline injection.
"CDI" (Common-rail Direct Injection) indicates a diesel engine with common-rail technology.
"Hybrid" indicates a hybrid car.
"NGT" indicates use of fuel gas.
"Kompressor" indicates the engine with a supercharger.
"Turbo" indicates the engine with a turbocharger, just used in a model Class A, B, Е and GLK.
