The propulsion system is so reliable that countries with nuclear submarines still feel the need to have a diesel electric submarines. Of 5 countries with nuclear submarines that not only the United States use this propulsion system. Under certain circumstances, this type of submarine is more deadly than nuclear submarines.

About six months before the outbreak of World War II, in March 1939 Dr. George Pegram of Columbia University, New York, proposed to the United States Navy to develop the use of uranium as a resource, including submarines to drive turbines. Navy interested and started researching. But after bombed Pearl Harbour and the United States involved in the war, all materials relating to atomic energy drawn, centered for the "Manhattan Project" to manufacture the first atomic bomb (Little Boy and Fat Man)
