Mk1 Golf / Rabbit (A1 / Typ 17, 1974-1983)

In May 1974, Volkswagen launched the first-generation Golf as a modern front-wheel drive car to replace the Volkswagen Beetle. Other Golf variants are launched including the Golf GTI (hot hatch) (1976), Golf diesel (September 1976), called the Jetta sedan version (October 1979), the Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet (January 1980) and a Golf-based pickup, the Volkswagen Caddy.

Golf Mk2 (A2 / Typ 19E, 1983-1992)

In September 1983 Mk2 Golf was launched into the market with wheelbase is slightly longer and the exterior and interior are slightly larger than its predecessor. In 1985, Golf also go on sale with 4 wheel drive versions (Golf syncro)

Golf Mk3 (A3 / Typ 1H, 1991-1999)

Volkswagen also add tech diesel engine variants Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) to the Golf variant, coupled with the presence of 2.8 L VR6 engine Volkswagen station wagon variant was also added to the ranks of the Golf family for the first time in September 1993, which later was named the Volkswagen Golf Estate. 

This car won the award European Car Of The Year in 1992 and managed to beat Citroën ZX and Opel Astra. 

In the United States, Canada, Mexico, and some areas of South America, Mk3 sold until 1999.
