Engined turboprop aircraft was designed to replace the piston transport aircraft Il-14 for close-medium haul flights. The aircraft is also designed to operate on a prepared foundation and rough. High-wing design protects the engine and propeller from debris / flakes, and comparison / power ratio: the higher the weight of the aircraft equivalent. The engine is solid and hard, and does not require sophisticated equipment for maintenance.
Manufacture of prototypes and mass production is done mainly in Kiev-Svyetoshoni, with 985 production aircraft, the remaining 180 were made in Ulan Ude. The next production variant 197 transport planes carried goods in Irkutsk. China's Xian Aircraft Company make a clone of the An-24 with the name Yunshuji Y-7. remains production continues in China, although production in Ukraine has been discontinued in 1978.
